The Making of Wonderful Copenhagen - The Exhibition about Ib Antoni

On the 50th anniversary of the death of the artist, the Museum of Copenhagen presents the man Ib Antoni in the context of the world and time he lived in. Original drawings and designs never shown before are exhibited alongside iconic works that put Denmark and its products firmly on the world map. The exhibition is the first of its kind, showing not only a wide selection of Antoni’s famous posters and designs, but also tracing his artistic process from sketches to the final version. Letters and personal belongings invite visitors to go behind the scenes, meet the man who made the works, and get inside the creative mind of the artist – from the first scribbled lines on a napkin to the finished poster. Come and enjoy the images that went worldwide, as well as those that never left the drawing board. Antoni’s works offer insight into the post-war era, when Copenhagen was to be made “wonderful”, even though life wasn't necessarily so.

Joris & The Football Match

On January 2 1967 at 19.00 the first TV commercials rolled over the screen in the Netherlands, including Antoni's cartoon with Joris Driepinter. Dutch agriculture was producing milk in abundance, so the Dutch Dairy Association wanted to launch a campaign to get the Dutch to drink more milk. So a hero was made, someone that could solve this problem. And Joris could solve any problem because he was so strong, and the reason he was strong was that he drank milk – a bit like the American comic-strip character Popeye and his trusty can of spinach. Joris would always be carrying his three glasses or ‘pints’ – pinten – of milk, hence the name Joris Driepinter – ‘Joris Three-Pinter’.The campaign with Joris Driepinter was a huge success and is still remembered and loved by the Dutch.

Holiday on Ice

Holiday on Ice, an American ice show, was founded in Ohio in 1945 by Morris Chalfen (1909-1979) and in 1966 Antoni made this introduction to the show.

In Antoni Legacy, unfortunately, we don't know much about the background of this, so we welcome more information if you would happen to know more about this movie.

Mr. Customer

Mr. Customer was produced by the Danish production company Laterna Film in 1964. As far as we know in Antoni Legacy, the film was commissioned by Danish Agriculture to show how Danish products live up to the ever-growing demands for quality that are made of consumers in the countries Denmark exports food to. The animations are of course by Ib Antoni and the text was written by Henning Nystad: In our modern society there are individuals whom we look up to, because they have power and influence. But one is more powerful than all the rest. The whole world competes for his favour. Thousands of millions are invested to meet his wishes. This individual is the consumer; Mr. Customer, who can pick and choose amongst the best from all the countries of the world. In the old days Mr. Customer was no customer at all. He took care of his own needs. His working day was a long one, for he was his own producer. Today the world is different. His working day is shorter, his wage larger. And now, he has become Mr. Customer - all of foodstuffs produced all over the world are at his disposal. He has become his own master. As a customer, it is he who imposes his demands on the producer. Once upon a time, it was a luxury to eat chicken. Today, everybody eats chicken. But Mr. Customer is particular - it must be good.

THE PUFFINS CAN WALK!

"The Puffins" has been brought back to life as a wonderful animation.

The animation of The "Puffins" from 1962 has been developed by one of the world’s leading animation agencies, Studio AKA in London and director Steve Small. The English agency has won a vast number of awards for their work.

The animation with the beautiful birds getting into a cab has been brought to life with an entirely new animation technique, developed during the process of this work with the motives of Ib Antoni.

In the work with Antoni’s illustrations, one of the main principles of Studio AKA has been not to change anything in the poster itself, but to bring it to life exactly as Ib Antoni originally drew it. Thus, you are able to freeze the animation on a single frame and see the original poster exactly as it was drawn in 1962.
