Wegner & The Chair (Expo 67 Canada)

Illustration 274

Ib Antoni’s illustration of the Danish furniture designer, Hans J. Wegner, and his world-famous chair was made in 1964 when The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark announced a poster competition in the occasion of The Danish Weeks in Stockholm.

Ib Antoni won the competition with 4 illustrations: Wegner & The Chair, The Ballet Dancer, Royal Guard & Confetti Cannon and The Ship is loaded with….

Ib Antoni has drawn Wegner with his beautiful chair, which five years before the birth of this illustration, was immortalized in the first TV-transmitted duel between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon, after which it was dubbed “The Chair”.

Wegner & The Chair was frequently used as a representative of Danish furniture design, for example on the World Exhibition in New York, USA in 1964-1965 and – as shown here – for the World Exhibition in Montreal, Canada in 1967.

In the subsequent years this series formed the chief motives in the exhibitions “The Danish Weeks”, shown across the globe in a cooperation between The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, The Industry Council (Danish Industry) and Danish Agriculture.

This illustration was made in 1964 for The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark.
