The Royal Guard in New York

Illustration 098

This illustration was made in 1964 for The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark and The Danish Trade Council (today Danish Industry) in the occasion of the World Exhibition in New York 1964/65, where the illustration represented the Danish Pavillion.

The proud Danish Royal Life Guard is carrying the Danish flag, Dannebrog, and above him the praising words of the host city float; “Denmark Salutes New York”.

During one of his stays in New York, Antoni designed this poster, that through The Danish Consulate in New York, was sent home to Denmark, to The Yellow Mansion in Amalienborg Castle in Copenhagen, where the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs also was situated.

The poster was printed in 3-4,000 copies in Denmark and sent to New York, where it hung in the city streets. In addition, half- and full-page advertisements were placed with the iluustration in all relevant media, advertising the Danish pavilion at the World Exhibition.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark found the illustration so popular, that it was used very diligently – and in countless versions with different texts – in campaigns around the world for many years after the World Exhibition.
