Volvo

Ib Antoni had many exciting collaborations with customers from all over the world, including the Swedish car manufactorer, Volvo.

Volvo means “I roll” in Latin and the brand name from 1911 was originally a patent registration to be used for a new series of ball bearings. However, the idea was set aside and the name was instead used by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustav Larson, to be used for a car they decided to build – a car that should be able to withstand the Swedish roads and temperatures. Volvo’s first series-produced car was born in 1927 and was named ÖV4 (Öppen Vagn, meaning “Open Wagon”); an open carriage with a 4-cylinder engine. However, Volvo achieved great success with the model PV 444, which was first introduced in 1944, at a price of 4800 SEK. Later, the model Volvo PV 544 came with the same shape as the PV 444, but with a different windshield. The more modern wagon, Volvo Amazon, was manufactured from 1956 to 1970 and was also a great success. Ib Antoni was given the task of making a series of illustrations to be used in the advertising promotions for Volvo’s cars, including Volvo Duet & Combi, Volvo Amazon, Volvo Snabbe, Volvo PV544 and Volvo Parade.

As Antoni Legacy is constantly working on cleaning Ib Antoni’s beautiful original drawings, one can never know when a new illustration from Antoni’s hand will see the light of day. But when the illustration is ready for reproduction, it is added to the collection on this page, both under Products, Illustrations and the client for which the illustration is designed. If you have a special interest in, or further knowledge about an Antoni-illustration or an Antoni-customer, you are more than welcome to contact us.
